Schönbecker Schweiz

Traditional recreation area, four nature conservation areas

The district of Schönebeck has four valleys which were designated as nature conservation areas owing to their outstanding ecological importance. Several remarkable nature conservation areas can therefore be found on the route of the NaturLinie 105 – in the northwest and southeast (Heisinger Ruhraue) – in the centre of the metropolis. A walk through "Schönebecker Schweiz" shows how green the Borbeck district is. The Borbeck green valleys were included in the urbanisation plan drafted in the 1920s. Here, you walk through unspoiled valleys, pass small streams, such as the Schönebecke, and back up the sparsely wooded hills which offer a beautiful contrast to the valleys. The original unspoiled character of the Siepen valleys with their many species of flora and small streams can be easily experienced. The Terrassenfriedhof cemetery embedded in terraced form in the Siepen valleys is one of the three major Essen cemeteries which were created in the 1920s and enhance the overall green system of the city (Director of Horticulture, Rudolf Korte).
