Green Urban Belt, West

Walk from Helenenstraße (about 3.5 km) to the main railway station: parks, historical green courtyards, avenues, landscaped estates dating from the post-war era

There are hidden entrances to green areas, even in the densely populated Altendorf area around Helenenstraße. The "Green Urban Belt" walk demonstrates this impressively: it invites the passengers on the NaturLinie 105 to break their journey and walk through the densely populated city following a green belt to the main railway station.
If you go down Helmholtzstraße, you already come to the first signs of the Green Urban Belt: front gardens, the tree-lined Helmholtzplatz as well as a green area on Heinitzstraße. The route passes through a tunnel in the Essen-West railway station to the large square at the Westbahnhof station. The Vocational College West is accommodated in a large school building dating from the Third Reich. When the college is open, it is possible to walk through the green courtyard directly to the Bärendelle estate. Alternatively, you can pass the college on the right. The Bärendelle estate was built by the Krupp construction office between 1915 and 1917 and is characterised by a large green park in the courtyard which you pass through to come directly into Riehl Park. The route continues through streets with front gardens and trees right into two beautiful landscaped courtyards of historical Krupp residential estates. It continues through the beautiful Alfredspark, which is hilly and contains stately trees. Here, you cross over the A40 motorway and immediately arrive in an estate dating from the post-war era which is characterised by large grass areas and groups of trees. You cross over the main road, Hobeisenstraße, and then reach the dead-straight avenue, Friedbergstraße.  It passes through West Germany's largest reconstruction area, which was built in accordance with the Athens Charter (Le Corbusier): with spaced tower blocks and, as a result, a park-like setting. At the end of Friedbergstraße, you can still find parts of the historical estate development, "Neuer Alfredshof", with archways and courtyard houses in green areas. The route continues through tree-lined streets; you cross over Savignystraße, which is designed as a large avenue. The perimeter block development repeatedly opens up and you reach public green courtyards.
You follow Planckstraße, cross over Holsterhauser Straße and reach the next green system: through a park with sculptures, you come to the Museum Folkwang. Go over the bridge behind the museum and you arrive in the "Pocketpark" at the Glückaufhaus building. From here, it is just a short way to the Stadtgarten (City Gardens) which takes you towards the main railway station.
